The Proper Way to recover from Surgery
Posted December 10, 2013 in Recovery
After undergoing surgery, it is always good to be patient and have realistic expectations about the outcome of your procedure. To ensure the safest and fastest recovery possible, there are certain things that can be done to recuperate properly.
Stay Clean
After a surgical procedure is complete, incision sites exist. Although the incisions are properly bandaged as soon as surgery is complete, it is important that you keep the wounds clean and regularly change the bandages as directed by your surgeon to promote healing as much as possible.
Eat Right
Certain foods also have a proven effect in aiding the body during recovery. Foods that are high in salt and saturated fat cause inflammation in the body, which can delay the healing process. Consuming healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins like chicken or fish, can provide the body with the essential nutrients it needs to appropriately heal.
Rest…But Not Too Much
It is imperative that you get plenty of rest, especially during the first few days after your surgery. However, do not keep yourself bed ridden throughout your entire recovery; begin walking around when you feel well enough to do so. This not only gets the blood circulating throughout your body, but also encourages the tissues to heal quicker.
Obviously, if patients don’t follow these tips, it doesn’t guarantee that complications will occur, but following these simple guidelines can greatly enhance the likelihood that you will have a safe and speedy recovery.
