CANDIDATES FOR BREAST IMPLANTS

Breast implants are most effective for individuals in good overall health and who choose to undergo surgery for themselves, not to fulfill someone else’s desires or ideals.

TYPES OF BREAST IMPLANTS

Silicone

Silicone implants are FDA approved for breast augmentation in women over 22 years old and are made of 100 percent pure grade silicone gel.

ADVANTAGES OF SILICONE IMPLANTS

• Tend to look and feel more natural than saline implants
• Are less likely to rupture

Saline

Saline implants are FDA approved for breast augmentation in women over 17 years old. These implants consist of an outer silicone shell filled with a sterile saline solution.

ADVANTAGES OF SALINE IMPLANTS

• Allow the breasts to retain a more natural shape
• Are not filled until after they are inserted, which allows the incisions to be smaller

TYPES OF INCISIONS

The implants can be inserted into the breasts through a variety of incision techniques.

Periareolar Incision – Around the outline of the areola (the dark colored skin surrounding the nipple)

Inframammary Incision – Along the crease on the underside of the breast

RECOVERY

Approximately 7 to 10 days of downtime are needed after surgery with breast implants. During this time, it is important that patients get plenty of rest and take prescribed medication for any discomfort. Once the breasts have sufficiently healed, patients can return to work and resume normal activities. However, any strenuous exercise or physical activities should be avoided for at least 6 weeks.

RESULTS

The results of breast implant surgery will be apparent immediately, but the implants may sit high on the chest for the first few months until they settle into a more natural position. Breast implants are expected to provide long-lasting results as long as patients maintain a healthy lifestyle.
